What’s
Missing From Your Value Analysis Model?
Greetings,
We have
all heard of the Boy Scouts motto “Be Prepared”. This motto
has guided Scouts since 1907 to be ready in mind and body for any
situation that might occur. I believe this same motto should be
adopted by value analysis practitioners as they go about their
duties as change agents in their healthcare organizations. This
motto is especially important to remember as you confront CHANGE
RESISTERS in your hospital, system or IDN.
The best
way I know to do so is to develop a “stakeholder analysis” on
every value analysis project you undertake. It’s a tool you can use
to identify and assess the type of resistance you will encounter,
enlist support from stakeholders and prepare a plan of action to
overcome any and all obstacles put in the way of VA success.
Here’s what this tool would look like for a dressing tray VA study:
|
Stakeholder |
Anxiety Level |
Type of Resistance |
Concerns |
Plan of Action |
|
Unit Manager |
Moderate |
Cultural |
It’s always been done this way! |
Suggest pilot study to prove value of change |
|
Head Nurse |
High |
Technical |
Will add work to my already busy day |
Show how it will save 2 minutes per patient |
|
Floor Nurses |
High |
Technical |
Tray is too hard to open |
Contact Mfg. to investigate this issue |
|
Nursing Assistants |
Low |
Technical |
Takes up more storage space |
Show that it is only ½ inch larger than present tray |
You will
be surprised how quick and easy it is to develop this tool for your
VA projects. More importantly, it will help you to open your eyes to
your stakeholders concerns and then help you to develop a plan of
action to reduce their anxiety levels so that you can
successfully move your project forward.
The
lesson to be learned here
is that sometimes it’s the SMALL things that you do on every
VA study you conduct that brings about the BIGGEST
return-on-your-investment in your time, efforts and savings.
With
this said, make sure that you add a “stakeholders analysis”
to your value analysis model so that you don’t miss an
important step that can and will smooth the road to savings for you
and your VA team(s).
