A New
Supply Saving Process That Really Works!
Greetings,
All
supply chain professionals are being challenged to save even more
money in 2010 due to the current recession, the affects of the new
economy and the uncertainty of the impending healthcare reform bill.
To meet
this challenge we all need to discover new supply savings processes
that REALLY work to reduce the cost of our high ticket
purchases and then would hold back healthcare inflation which was
about 4% last year. The new supply savings process that I will be
introducing to you today to assist you in meeting this goal is based
on the philosophy that you can save even more money if you
focus on QUALITY vs. COST CUTTING! Here’s how it works!
This
philosophy is grounded in the logic that you should NEVER initiate a
cost cutting project with your clinicians that has as its sole
purpose to save money. This is an immediate turn-off for the
clinicians that will be participating in your project. A much better
way is to attack the defects (anything your customers don’t want or
need in their products, services or technology) in their supply
streams which will improve their quality and as a byproduct save
money.
To bring
this point home, I just read an article in Hospital Financial
Managers Magazine that talks about Spectrum Health System, Grand
Rapids, Michigan, initiating a project to reduce their blood
transfusions in the orthopedic cases after they determined that the
variation (blood products administered per case) between 21
orthopedic surgeons was in a range 9.7% to 82.5%. After gaining
consensus amongst their surgeons that improvement was needed based
on these statistics, the surgeons changed their practices to conform
to regional and national standards. By doing so, Spectrum reduced
their blood use from 31% to 13.5% for their total knee replacements,
representing hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings. This
provided their patients with the most appropriate and medically
indicated high-quality treatment at the lowest possible cost.
Simply
put, if your goal is to save money in 2010 DON’T make it the sole
purpose of your cost cutting initiatives. Instead, your broader goal
should be to have a high-quality
value analysis program that raises
both clinical and financial outcomes for your healthcare
organization.
This way
everyone wins!
