Are You Really Thinking Outside the Box?
Greetings,
We would all like to think we are innovative in our supply chain
strategies, but are we really thinking outside the box (thinking
differently, unconventionally and from a new perspective)
or are we just following the herd? I will let you answer that
question.
What I will state here is that “only big ideas will enable
you to have big breakthroughs in your supply chain strategies”.
These paradigm shifts won’t come from buying into the herd
mentality. These big ideas will only come to you in a flash by
having limitless boundaries in your thinking.

The concept of thinking outside the box was created by consultant
Mike Vance while working with the Disney Company. It was based on
the premise of the “nine-dot puzzle” where you are asked
to connect the dots by drawing four straight, continuous lines that
pass through each of the nine dots, and never lifting the pencil
from the paper.
The answer to this puzzle, which most of us including me have been
stumped by, is to
draw the lines outside the confines of the square area defined by
the nine dots themselves. The puzzle only seems difficult because we
have drawn an imaginary line outside the boundaries of the square,
which limits our options in correctly connecting the dots.
The “nine-dot puzzle” is really a metaphor for our own thinking
process; we are only limited by our perceived boundaries, never by
our circumstances. Albert Einstein was one of the greatest out of
the box thinkers of our times because he was never limited by what
was considered at the time boundaries of space and time. All of his
theories (e.g. defection of light by gravity, photon theory, zero
point energy, etc.) were thought to be fiction, until he and others
proved them to be fact.
It’s the same with supply chain strategies. Just because every one
of your colleagues thinks that vendor controlled consignment
inventories are the right tactic for them, it might be the wrong
strategy for you. Just because all your peers are joining a new
regional GPO, doesn’t mean it the right decision for you. There
might be new and better answers on these issues that you haven’t
thought of yet, because you are being held back by the “conventional
wisdom” of your time and place.
So, when someone suggests a new strategy, tactic or technique that
everyone is jumping on in the marketplace, don’t be so quick to say
yes to this new idea until you have turned this idea upside down and
backwards to see if you can think of an even better breakthrough
idea to meet the same objective. Then and only then will you be
truly thinking outside the box. This will enable you to solve any
supply chain puzzle that will comes your way. It just takes some
limitless boundaries thinking to do so.
