The Cost
of Doing NOTHING in Supply Chain Management
Greeting,
One of
the questions that I ask everyone that I talk to in my dealings with
supply chain professionals everyday is “what are you up to”
in your supply chain operations? Their answers are frequently
inspirational, educational and transformative when I hear how they
are making big positive changes happen at their healthcare
organizations. But too often I hear from these bright and engaging
individuals that they are just maintaining the “status quo”,
or doing NOTHING to move the ball forward in their supply chain
operations.
That
brings me to the point of this article. I have never come across a
healthcare organization in my long supply chain career that
couldn’t do better than good in everything they do. More
importantly, the cost of doing NOTHING is actually contributing to
healthcare organizations losing tens of thousands of dollars a year
in labor, expenses or both.
As an
illustration, most value analysis teams that we have observed have
been doing the same things in the same ways for decades. No changes,
no improvements, no self examination and no enhancements in the way
they do business. The result is that hundreds of thousands of
dollars in supply chain savings are being left on the table
untouched.
I could
also cite numerous examples where we have observed supply chain
labor being wasted doing unnecessary and unneeded chores and supply
expense budgets that are bloated because no one is investigating why
this is occurring. So doing NOTHING does have a cost that is
insidious, pervasive and damaging to your healthcare organization’s
bottom line.
My point
here is that even if healthcare reform doesn’t become law,
healthcare providers are now realizing that they are under the gun
to dramatically improve their quality while at the same time
lower their cost, since our nation’s healthcare cost (4% increase in
2008) is unsustainable over the next decade.
As supply chain professionals, we all need to pitch in to help lower
our healthcare organization’s cost. Doing NOTHING isn’t an option if
our industry is to remain viable, profitable and relevant in the 21st
century.
This way
everyone wins!
