The
Power of Self-Correction with your Physician Preference Items
I just
read a Physicians Preference Items survey conducted by Materials
Management in Healthcare and AHRMM that hit all the bases on the
current thinking on this hot topic. However, in my opinion this
survey missed one big factor that we have found is the
ULTIMATE answer to changing your physician’s behavior on how they
select and buy their PPI items. Best of all, this solution to
this PPI challenge that we all face is simple, intuitive and
non-confrontational.
We have
employed this powerful PPI strategy for 22 years, but never put a
name to it until now. The light bulb when off last week when I was
talking to a supply chain professional who told me that he had found
the best description for this emerging best practice. He called this
strategy SELF-CORRECTION
(a mechanism that allows for automatic correction of mistakes,
errors or misjudgments)
which has been a major breakthrough for him with his PPI items.
In
brief, we use this powerful strategy to provide physicians with
charts, graphs and metrics that compare their PPI selections
and/or practices with their peer’s PPI selection and/or practices.
Then let the physicians decide as a group if they want to continue
their current behavior patterns or SELF-CORRECT to mirror local,
regional or national norms.
For
example, we determined with our
Utilizer® Dashboard that one of our
clients was spending $46,398 more than their peers for contrast
media. When a Value Analysis Project manager investigated this
utilization misalignment they uncovered that their hospital had
standardized on 150cc pre-fill contrast media syringes when their
community standard was to use 100cc pre-filled syringes. When
this information was presented to the Director of Radiology
graphically and statistically he agreed to SELF-CORRECT his behavior
and to conform to the community standard of 100cc pre-filled
syringes. No fuss, no bother, no blood in the streets!
As we
ratchet down the price of the PPI items that we buy, our job is only
half done if we don’t also attack how our PPI items are
utilized since this is where 27% of our new PPI savings reside.
That’s where the concept of SELF-CORRECTION by our physicians is the
most valuable strategy to employ.
Our goal
shouldn’t be to push or pull our physicians into making decisions
they won’t like or adhere to but to instead guide our
physicians into making the right product selection decisions in
their own time, in their own way and in the best interest of all
involved parties.
